Ttujur Loop Trail - Continuing Trail Developement in Gegharkunik Region
In the heart of Gegharkunik region, a nature-formed trail begins at Gavar’s central square and stretches all the way to Ttujur, which means “sour water” and is home to a mineral spring with healing properties. This scenic path crosses the Gavaraget River and meanders through dense forest, culminating at the rock-carved St. Hovhannes Chapel, a hidden gem steeped in history and spirituality.
In 2024, this breathtaking trail became the focus of a new project, led by Trails For Change (TFC) in collaboration with AFRAT, CEPFA, and the Gavar Municipality. The aim of the project was to improve local trail infrastructure, raise environmental awareness, and empower Gavar’s youth with hands-on, skills-based training.

The project kicked off with a stakeholder meeting at the Gavar Municipality building, where community representatives and partners gathered to align on the project’s vision. TFC’s crew introduced the initiative’s core goals: enhancing the local economy through sustainable trails, involving youth in environmental conservation efforts, and delivering practical training to nurture the next generation of trail stewards.

Over the next two days, selected young participants rolled up their sleeves for an intensive trail maintenance workshop. Guided by TFC’s experienced crew, they restored a segment of the Gavar-Ttujur trail, practicing essential techniques such as lopping, brushing, and blazing - all critical skills for maintaining safe, sustainable trails.
Following the training, the team conducted a field assessment to identify key points along the trail where directional signage was needed to improve accessibility. After finalizing and printing the designs, the new trail signs were installed on December 9, thanks to the help of local volunteers.
This project in Gavar didn’t just improve a trail — it strengthened community bonds, inspired pride in the local environment, and showcased the power of partnership between NGOs and municipalities. With projects like these, Trails For Change and its partners are not only building trails; they’re building a future where communities thrive in harmony with nature.

This project in Gavar not only enhanced local trail infrastructure but also fostered a strong sense of community and care for the environment. Most importantly, it highlighted the impact of strategic partnerships - between TFC, AFRAT, CEPFA and the Gavar Municipality - laying the foundation for future joint initiatives that promote sustainability and community-driven development.
