Trail development in Lori: Connecting Lorut, Atan, Shamut and Ahnidzor villages
In the heart of Armenia’s lush Lori region, a new chapter in sustainable tourism and community connectivity has begun. Thanks to the support of Strategic Development Agency (SDA) and WWF-Armenia, and under the “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” (LILA) project, Trails For Change has completed a major trail development initiative that’s opening doors for eco-tourism and local development.

This project focused on creating and improving a hiking trail system that links the picturesque villages of Lorut, Atan, Shamut, and Ahnidzor. Now complete, the 15.8 km trail loop allows for 1–2 day hikes through some of Lori’s most beautiful natural landscapes. What was once a fragmented path is now a cohesive, accessible network that invites visitors to explore, learn, and connect.

During the implementation phase, the team encountered a critical challenge: a section of the trail crossing a river had been severely damaged due to recent flooding, making it unsafe for hikers. In response, a short but vital bridge was constructed, ensuring continuous and safe access along the trail. This responsive approach to trail building underscores the project’s commitment to both safety and sustainability.

Beyond trail construction, the project also emphasized environmental education and conservation. In partnership with WWF-Armenia, four interpretive signboards were installed along the route, providing hikers with insights into the local biodiversity. These educational elements not only enrich the hiking experience but also foster a deeper appreciation for Armenia’s rich and fragile ecosystems.

With the completion of this trail loop, the villages of Lorut, Atan, Shamut, and Ahnidzor are now better connected - not just by paths, but through shared opportunities for economic and social development. Local businesses, guesthouses, and artisans stand to benefit from increased visitor traffic, while travelers gain access to lesser-known yet stunning corners of Armenia.
